Elizabethton celebrated its 200th birthday in 1999. Be assured that there will be a countless number of events & celebrations centered around our most treasured landmark--the Doe River Covered Bridge. Built back in 1882, this is believed to be the oldest such bridge in the state still in use.
Our four different seasons allow for the enjoyment of all outdoor activities from snow skiing to water activities, from horseback riding to hiking, and countless others!
Spring is a time for new beginnings. With temperatures ranging from 65-75 it's a perfect time to take advantage of being outside to appreciate the beautiful scenery. Like to hike?! The Appalachian Trail is just a hop, skip and a jump away.
In the warm (85-95) summer months enjoy a day on the pristine waters of Watauga Lake. Maintained by the TVA, this is one of the cleanest lakes in Tennessee. The clear aqua blue waters backed by our smoky grey mountains make for a breath-taking sight! When the wind starts to blow softly and the leaves start to turn, you will not want to do anything except enjoy the incredible atmosphere. Everywhere you look is an array of color! The Blue Ridge Parkway offers fabulous miles of autumn colors, with many stopping areas to savor the scenery.
With snow skiing coming one of the most popular sports, you are in luck! Just 30 to 45 minutes away are Sugar Mountain, Beech Mountain, Hawksnest Ski Area and Wolf Laurel. These offer the thrill of downhill skiing. For the more energetic, Roan Mountain State Park is well known for its cross-country skiing.
Are you a racing fan? The Bristol Motor Speedway is host to three NASCAR sanctioned race weekends per year, including one Craftsman Truck Series Race, two Busch Grand National Races, and two Winston Cup Races.
Convenient transportation is provided by the Tri-Cities Regional Airport just north of us, which is served by major air carriers. Elizabethton also has a municipal airport home to Moody Bible Institute for smaller private planes or smaller jets.
